Perhaps nowhere is this contrast more salient than in the perception soft materials such as cloths: dynamics these objects (including how their three-dimensional forms vary) are determined by physical stiffness, elasticity, mass. Here hypothesize that cloths must involve image statistics, abstract object representations incorporate intuitive physics. We provide behavioral computational evidence for hypothesis. find humans can visually match stiffness with unfamiliar textures from way they undergo natural transformations (e.g. flapping wind) across different scenarios. A model casts cloth mental simulation explains important behavior. Full paper be found at https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.05.12.443806v1.

compactifications and representations of transformation semigroups

this thesis deals essentially (but not from all aspects) with the extension of the notion of semigroup compactification and the construction of a general theory of semitopological nonaffine (affine) transformation semigroup compactifications. it determines those compactification which are universal with respect to some algebric or topological properties. as an application of the theory, it is i...

Object Representations Used in Action and Perception

The remarkable skill of the human hand in object manipulation tasks is not the result of rapid sensorimotor processes or powerful effector mechanisms. Rather, the secret lies in the way that the nervous system organizes and controls manipulation tasks. Skilled and dexterous object manipulation requires the ability to tailor motor commands, predictively, to the goals of the task and the physical...

Inductive generalization relies on category representations.

The ability to take information learned about one object (e.g., a cat) and extend it to other objects (e.g., a tiger, a lion) makes human learning efficient and powerful. How are these inductive generalizations performed? Fisher, Godwin, and Matlen (2015) proposed a developmental mechanism that operates exclusively over the perceptual and semantic features of the objects involved (e.g., furry, ...
